Many people these days suffer from neck and shoulder pain from a variety of causes and sources. There is not one single common cause of Neck and Shoulder pain, but many different ones here are a few.

Poor Posture

Whether it is from sitting at a desk too long, or having a job where it is difficult to maintain good posture, poor posture can impact pain in your back and neck. If you hold your neck in an awkward position for a prolonged time it can lead to strains in your neck and shoulders. Some of the worst postures for your body are; sleeping too high on a large or a stack of pillows, grinding your teeth at night, bending to look over at a phone or at a desk with your neck strained forward or tilted up, and jerking your neck during exercise.

– Whiplash

The tearing of muscles, tendons, and ligaments in your neck from a sudden movement of your neck is called whiplash and it is usually due to an auto accident. The symptoms can take 24 hours or longer to appear after the incident and they are: neck pain and stiffness, headaches, dizziness, blurred vision and tiredness. Some people recover from whiplash in three months but some can have chronic pain long after.

– Sports Injury

An injury to the soft tissue can often lead to neck and shoulder pain. Soft tissue in your body includes your muscles, tendons, and ligaments. This is as opposed to the hard tissue of bones and cartilage. Any kind of sports injury that does not lead to a break in the body is typically classified as a soft tissue injury.

– Cervical Herniated Disc

When our cervical discs in our spine shrink, the vertebrae (the bones) move closer together and can damage one or more of the discs. The inner portion protrudes, it’s called a slipped, herniated, or prolapsed disc. The common symptoms of a herniated disc include; numbness, pain, tingling, aching or a burning sensation in your neck.
