Necks do a lot of work. They are holding up the most important part of your body, that makes us who we are. But how often do you take the time to take care of your important neck? Neck injuries, strain, and soreness can weaken your neck muscles which can lead to more pain in your neck and surrounding muscles in your back. It is important to get your neck feeling better, before it gets so bad that it impacts your overall posture and health. Here are some neck strengthening exercises.

Side-to-Side Neck Tilt: From a comfortable seated position with your head centered and facing forward. Tilt your neck toward one shoulder, leading with your ear. Hold the position for ~5 seconds and then return to the neutral starting position. Do this five times to each side.

Neck Turn: Begin by looking straight ahead, then turn your head to one side. Keep your chin at the same level as it was in the center without raising or lowering. Do this five times to each side.

Resistance Exercises: Start in a standing or sitting position. Gently put your left hand on the left side of your head just above your ear. Gently press your head into your hand while maintaining a straight position with your head. Repeat on your right side with your right hand. Repeat as many times as feels comfortable for you.

Head Lifts: Start by laying flat with your back on the floor, bring your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor, lift and lower your head. Try your best not to raise your shoulders as you do this motion. This exercise can be tried while lying on either your side and on your stomach as well. Do what makes you feel comfortable.

Shoulder Circles: From a neutral standing position, raise your shoulders straight up and move them in a forward circle motion with your arms down at your sides. Lower your shoulder and repeat in the backwards direction. Repeat one each side at least 5 times.

It is important to note that if any of these exercises cause extra pain or weakness in either your hands or arms, please stop right away and talk with your doctor.
