In our last blog we highlighted the most common causes of neck and shoulder pain. If you’re experiencing shoulder pain, tightness, and/or discomfort, here are some stretches that can help offer some relief.

1. Across The Chest Stretch –  Cross your right arm across your chest, and use your left hand (or forearm) to hold onto the right upper arm (above or below the elbow). Using your left hand or forearm, slightly pull the right arm across the body. Hold the stretch for 30 seconds, then repeat it on the other side. This movement stretches the back of the arm and shoulders.

  1. Shoulder Circles – One of the simplest stretches you can do if you’re experiencing shoulder pain is shoulder circles. Roll your shoulders forward in a circular motion, then try rolling your shoulders forward in the opposite direction. The movement helps improve flexibility and loosen your muscles before beginning exercise.
  2. Downward Dog Pose – Downward Dog is a yoga pose that stretches your back, shoulders, and hamstring and calf muscles. To do the downward dog, start in an all fours position, with your hips above your knees and shoulders above your wrists. From there, tuck your toes under, and on an exhalation, engage your lower belly drawing the navel back to the spine. Press through your hands and lift your hips back and up to bring yourself into an upside-down V pose. (EkhartYoga) Your spine should be straight, head and neck in line with the spine, your arms extended, and fingers wide. Try to keep your heels on the ground for the best stretch. Hold the stretch for 30 seconds, then put your knees down and rest. Repeat a 3-5 times.
  3. Thread The Needle – To thread the needle, you’ll need to start by sitting in a kneeling position. Stretch your arms forward so your head is down and arms are fulling extended. Leaving your left arm fully extended, take your right arm and reach it under the left arm so your arms are perpendicular. Roll your right shoulder under and stretch the right arm as far as you can. Hold the stretch for 30 seconds, then switch sides.
